In initial periodontal treatment, calculus and bacteria that cause inflammation are removed from the oral environment removing the calculus on and under the gingiva and smoothing the root surfaces. Oral hygiene education is given to the patient to ensure that the gingivas are healthy. In advanced cases, surgical intervention and biomaterial (bone greft) application may be required depending on the degree of bone resorption.
